Rurudo-no-Oka (Lourdes Hill)

Thoughts go to the miracle
of Mother Mary on an airy hilltop

Lourdes is a town in the southwest of France, in the foothills of the Pyrenees mountains. In 1858, a local girl was collecting firewood in a grotto when a young woman appeared to her and told her to dig a hole by hand. On digging the hole, spring water gushed out of it, and that water is said to have had the power to cure illness. The young woman was Mother Mary herself, and the miraculous spring cured illness and injury on numerous occasions and became a holy site for Catholics. Lourdes Hill faithfully reproduces the grotto and spring at Lourdes. The sight of this grotto and its pervading solemn atmosphere has gently soothed the souls of numerous people of different faiths and creeds. There are numerous grottos in church gardens and so on resembling the one at Lourdes, but few reproduce the grotto to actual size. While this is a sacred place, happily anyone may visit, not just followers of Catholicism. Lourdes Hill is a place for prayer and quiet contemplation that is open to everyone.
