Odtomari-jinja Shrine

Otomari and Kazanashi
The spirits of brother and sister enshrined in 2 places

Also called Taguchi Goryosha, this shrine was built in 1845 to enshrine the spirits of Yoichiro Taguchi Yoichiro and his older sister Matsue (although there is a theory that it was his younger sister), who were murdered in the Nikaikuzure Incident, part of a power struggle within the Otomo Clan. Each is enshrined as a deity in a Goryosha Shrine, which stands in the districts where each was captured and executed, Yoichiro in Otomari, Matsue in Kazanashi. The local people have worked together to look after the shrine, and its beautiful grounds including its pond with slow swimming carp are the greatest testimony to that. As you stand amid the lush forest surrounding the shrine, you will naturally find your mind easing. It is a tranquil and pure shrine, standing quietly in the eastern part of Usuki City.

The pathway is narrow, so please park by the sea and walk from there (several minutes). You will see the torii gate once past the houses.

The ceiling of the worship hall is covered in paintings like picture cards from the Hyakunin Isshu card game.
