6.Mizuchi Tenmangu Shrine

Mizuchi Tenmangu Shrine

A shrine, a torii gate, and rice paddies
make a ubiquitous and familiar scene

In the background of this tranquil scenery stands “Tenmansha.” This shrine was built in 923 to enshrine the deity, Lord Michizane Sugawara-no-Michizane, and stands quietly watching over the villagers’ rice paddies and fields. Its idyllic bearing befits the description, “the village’s guardian deity.” Standing in front of the shrine’s second torii gate is a “senryu plum tree,” which Notsu Town has designated as a Natural Monument. While it is quite an old tree, its name is so well liked by the local people that it is also the name of the local sake. Visitors may enjoy pondering the faith of the local people, including the connections between the shrine and the nine-storied stone pagoda and the senryu plum tree.

Although this shrine is small, the main shrine has a relief carving of a dragon.

Behind the shrine are two trees that have become one. The deity might answer your prayers here for fulfillment in love or happiness in marriage.
