Mimusubi-jinja Shrine

Housing Shinto deities and Buddhas,
the awe-inspiring and wondrous “Top Temple”(Uen-Tera)

With Mimusubi-jinja Shrine at its heart, this is the hilltop home for various shrines and temples including Koshoji Temple, Konpiragu Shrine, and Ishizuchi-jinja Shrine. Jizo (guardian deity of children) statues stand by the path up the hill, each step bringing visitors a sense of getting closer to the presence of the Shinto deities and Buddhas, heightening interest. This unique prospect is testament to the depth of faith among the local people, and the work they have done together to carry on caring for these shrines and temples. Still deeply rooted in the lives of the local people are the Gankake, a ceremony in prayer for sound health and bountiful fish catches held in February each year, and the Winter Festival held in December at Mimusubi-jinja Shrine. The hilltop shrines and temples look out over the port town, true protector deities of the community.

The Daishi-do Hall (right) with numerous other enshrined Shinto deities and Buddhas. A special feature of Mimusubi-jinja Shrine is that you can pay your respects to them all in the same visit.

Standing by the hillside path are the principal images of each temple in the Shikoku Pilgrimage.
